When Target announced it was partnering with English luxury handbag house Mulberry, via Gilt Groupe, I was really looking forward to seeing what they would come up with.
Mulberry for Target officially hit stores today, as did my disappointment. I get it, it’s a retail chain department store. The bag isn’t going to look like the typical luxorious handbag that Mulberry offers, but they can do better than this.
Without my glasses on, I can’t see very well from far away and already knew these bags looked cheap & tacky. Mulberry for Target offers several different options (see some below) including satchels, crossbodies and totes.
The one that sticks out the most obviously and not for good reasons would have to be the cerise leopard print. It SCREAMS cheesy, tasteless and unsophistacted. The patent leather looks exceedingly cheap, the lines on the velvet/denim poorly sewn.
In an interview with creative director of Mulberry Emma Hill, she described the Mulberry girl as: “…is playful and creative. She is quietly confident and will make you smile. She enjoys fashion but hates pretentiousness. She is intelligent and generous but a little bit cheeky, with bucketloads of English charm! She loves beautiful things and is generous, friendly and warm. She knows who she is without being arrogant.” Said Hill.
If you consider yourself to be any of these things, take my advice and just stay clear of this collection. Save your money for perhaps the real thing.
