Archive for December, 2010

Blake Lively, Jessica Simpson, Rebecca Hall.

This “fashion trend” is one that has gotten under my skin, dug it’s ugly infected nails in and stayed there. Can anyone give me a reasonable answer as to why anyone needs a slashed sleeve on a piece of clothing? I understand you may want to show a little bit of skin without looking like a tart, but this seems to defeat the purpose. Anytime I see someone with these sleeves it looks like they got attacked by a horror movie villain with a knife or the person making the article of clothing ran out of material and couldn’t finish the sleeves.

It’s not a good look. Please, please, please. Make it go away.

Tavi Gevinson amazes me. The girl is a rock star. She started her fashion blog “Style Rookie” when she was 11 years old. 11.

She has already accomplished what many in the industry are trying to achieve; appearing on the cover of Pop magazine, appearing in Teen Vogue, a guest at many fashion shows, and is the muse to designers.

At just 14 years old now, with all Gevinson has achieved, one can only imagine what’s to come.

French actress and model Isabelle Caro, 28 has died. Caro was best known for her campaign ad she did in 2007–an Italian billboard where she appeared completely naked to promote the awareness of  anorexia. She is well known to many Americans because of Jessica Simpson’s show The Price of Beauty.

Caro suffered from the disease since the age of 13 and at her worst weighed only 55lbs, at 5’5″. At the time of the photograph for the billboard Caro was around 59lbs.

The ad, for Nolita Clothing shocked many and sparked controversy. Caro looked more like a Holocaust survivor than a model.

Although Caro’s passing is just now coming to light, she actually died on Nov. 17. According to several sources, she was recently hospitalized for a respiratory illness, but the exact cause of death has not been released.

Caro had told CBS News in 2007 that she agreed to pose for the campaign because “I said if I can put my years of suffering to good use then it will not have been pointless. … I know it’s a shocking photo, and I want it to shock. It’s really a warning that it is a serious illness.”

The suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of swimwear designer Sylvie Cachay on December 9 has been ruled a homicide by the New York medical examiner.

33 year old Cachay was found in a bathtub at exclusive Manhattan hotel SoHo House in the Meatpacking District. According the medical examiners office, Cachay was strangled and drowned. When she was found she was fully clothed with bruising and bite marks.

Cachay’s former boyfriend Nicholas Brooks was arrested and arraigned on charges of attempted murder and strangulation. Brooks was indicted on Dec. 16, but prosecutors are to make the charges public Jan. 4. Until then, he is being held without bail.

You have got to be kidding me!…is what I said for at least 15 minutes after I saw this. Really? Pajama jeans? Have we reached a new level of laziness that we need pants that people can’t tell we have slept in them and then go to the store in? (By the way, anyone with any type of fashion sense above a holiday sweater wouldn’t give these a second thought)

The website claims they’re “stylish, sexy, soft, and comfortable”. I have yet to see them in person but from pictures and video it does not appear that there is anything stylish or sexy about them. They make a big fuss about how regular jeans can cost “up to $80” but these are $40. I would not take these for free. If you can’t change your pants to sleep and find the energy to get up, and put regular jeans on, you’re pathetic.

These need to be burned along with the snuggies, crocs, vera bradley bags, shape-ups…and give me some time, I’ll think of some other stuff.

Let’s be frank, there was a ton of ground to cover when it came to the best dressed and the worst in 2010. It wouldn’t be possible to show everyone, so here is just a taste of it…don’t be afraid to share your opinions!

Hopefully 2011 will be just as interesting!

Dasha Zhukova looks sweet and innocent in Azzedine Alaia

Natalia Vodianova in Louis Vuitton. Hu??? Did she have a mirror in her house before she left?

Diane Kruger looks absolutley smashing in Calvin Klein Collection. The simplicity of the gown is perfect and it fits her like a glove.

Zoë Saldana in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. I despise this dress. I could not understand for the life of me why anyone liked it.

Cameron Diaz shines in Oscar de la Renta. It compliments her skin tone and hair beautifully.

Beyoncé Knowles in Giorgio Armani Privé.

It eerks me that the dress looks like it’s falling apart.

Elisa Sednaoui dazzles in Ralph Lauren Collection at the opening of Lauren’s new Paris store.

Lily Donaldson in Marc Jacobs. Donaldson commands everyones attention in this dress.

Blake Lively in Chanel Haute Couture. Not a huge fan of matching the shoes to the dress and what is growing on the dress?

Chloë Sevigny in Lanvin. I typically don’t care for animal print but Sevigny looks amazing.

Miley Cyrus in Marchesa.

Hannah honey, you have some toilet paper hanging there.

Tom Ford looks dashing as always in his own line.

Gisele Bündchen in Calvin Klein Collection. Holy hell Gisele. Gives a new meaning to sexy back.

Kate Hudson in Burberry. Minus the awkward pose, I do like the color on her, not totally sold on the shoes though.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Valentino. Love this color and cut. Lookin good SJP.

Alexa Chung in Valentino Haute Couture.

This might have been ok had it not been for those horrendous shoes. Looking at them makes me squirm.

Charlize Theron in Dior.

Ugh. Charlize I love you but this dress is not working at all. Remember, gold is cold?

Olivia Wilde in Marchesa.

Finally, Marchesa did it right for me. Love love love this dress. it looks like a dream on Wilde; the beautiful subtle pale seafoam green, the shimmery metallic silvers. Everything comes together so well.

Hilary Swank in Donna Karan New York.

Apparently she was trying to stay fresh for later?

Jessica Biel in Ralph Lauren Collection

I just can’t get myself to like this. I love Ralph Lauren dearly but maybe if it was styled better, and she didn’t look like she just rolled out of bed and threw her hair up it would work.

Jada Pinkett-Smith in Emilio Pucci…Willow Smith in, umm…

This whole family looks ridiculous. I don’t know who looks the worst. My vote probably goes for Willow though. Apparently this is a “custom made” outfit. Some sites/blogs have called her very fashion forward (seriously?) and thought the yellow addition was a nod to Michael Jackson. Obviously they, and the Smiths have whipped their hair one too many times.

Marion Cotillard in Dior.

I’ve seen Cotillard look amazing, but this isn’t doing it for me because I feel like it makes her look larger than she is.

Mr. Brad Goreski looks fantastic in everything…I am in love with his style and how he puts himself together. Formerly of The Rachel Zoe Project, I’m sure he’s found his way in your hearts as well. Out on his own now, I know he’s going to achieve great things and look amazing while doing them.

Nicki Minaj in Manish Marora and Christian Louboutin

Is she supposed to look like a lobster? because that’s all I see everytime I look at it.

Colin Firth in Tom Ford.

Great (underrated) actor, classic look.

Rihanna in Elie Saab.

I actually love this. Lately I’ve been wondering what Rihanna has been thinking but her hair has finally toned down some and I think this is a gorgeous dress and looks lovely on her.

I gotta be honest, I’m not sure who made this dress Melissa Joan Heart is in but the point is…what the hell is she doing?? No longer is she Sabrina the Teenage Witch so why in God’s name does she have a side pony and why does she look like she borrowed something from her little sisters closet??

Mind you, she’s at an Emmy’s event. Seek help asap Melissa.

Taylor Swift in Collette Dinnigan.

I can’t decided how I feel about this. I’m so glad that Taylor finally realized there’s more things to do with her hair than the ’20s wave, and let’s be honest she’s a gorgeous girl but when I look at this it sort of feels like someone went wild with a bedazzler. Plus, the shoes are too matchy matchy.

Jeff Bridges in Gucci.

Not to mention a kick-ass goatee.

Miss Kelly O has been looking fierce lately. She’s in fantastic shape and looks healthy. Osbourne is bringing it in this lovely black lace Christian Dior Resort 2011.

Marchesa has let me down quite bit at recent award shows but I thought Sandra Bullock shined in this gown. It was definitely her night and as we all know she had some rough terrain ahead of her but she looked gorgeous and is a woman of class.

Oh no JLo. Apparently, she ran out of options and had to make a dress out of bubble wrap at the last minute.

Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa.

I think it needs a couple of more ruffles. Bed skirts come to mind.

Christina Aguilera in Atelier Versace

Did Xtina find a hot tub time machine and time warp back to 2002?

Carey Mulligan looks adorable and classy in RM Roland Mouret. Her pixie cut and dimples are the perfect accessories to any outfit.

Jennifer Carpenter looks sexy, leaving lots to the imagination in this Oday Shakar gown

Ugh. The Kardashians. Where to begin.

The point is…they do not have any fashion sense. I’m sorry if you’re a fan (not really) but as you can see in the photo, they’re not exactly fashion icons. They look more like three women, hmm 2 women and possibly 1 tranny that you would find on a street corner.

Like Tim Gunn said about their fashion; “I find that while it may have some sexiness to it, I find it’s largely vulgar,” he said. “I find it has a cheapness and a tawdriness.” Tim joked that now he’d have to worry about the Kardashians attacking him, but went on to add: “And I’m not exactly a fan of how they navigate the world to be perfectly honest.”

(When on the Joy Behar show)
