TLC, you’ve really outdone yourselves this time. Though they can’t completley get credit, as the series I’m speaking of comes from BBC television.
If you haven’t witnessed My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding yet, you really are missing out. The show gives in inside look to ‘the secret world of gypsies’, or travelers where a girl is raised to have the only goal of becoming a housewife, (at a very very young age) going off with her new husband after her wedding and living in a trailer. Awwww, romantic. I know what I want to do with my life now.
Ok, so I don’t want to knock anyone’s culture, but when I think of Gypsies, I think of someone TRAVELING in a wagon in ‘rags’ with a tambourine and a babushka. Have you seen the show? It’s a mix of Toddler’s and Tiara’s, Jerseylicious, Jersey Shore, and any other Jersey show.
Each girl tries to out-do the last with her wedding gown, making it bigger. One said “The more bruises and bleeding, the better.” Hardly being able to walk in the gown at all, and walking like horses when they do walk, most are carried by their husbands some of the time.
When the girls go out, whether it be to celebrate one last night of freedom, guests at the wedding party, or going out in general, the clothing is something to see. I’m fairly certain most of these people are just from Jersey. They are said to have “very high morals” but are dressed like prostitutes. Someone explain it to me please if you can.
The show in its entirety is amazing. the clothing, the dancing, the drawn on eyebrows, the concept of living. The parked trailers that don’t seem to go anywhere when they’re suppose to be travelers. The ‘grabbing’ courtship ritual. Yes, grabbing. Because girls can’t approach boys it’s up to the boys to tempt the girls with a kiss or a ‘grab’. All sounds so lovely. The girls leaving their homes for a trailer, where they will serve their husbands for the rest of their lives. All of them (so far, except for one) very eager to do so.

A little girl and her brother on the day of her first communion. They fist pumped on the way to the church.
